As we approach the coming heat wave, the National Weather Service in Pendleton has issued an excessive heat watch in effect from Tuesday morning to Friday evening. It is likely to be replaced by a warning in the next couple of days.
The watch is for most lowland areas in Pendleton’s county warning area, including the Tri-Cities, Yakima, Walla Walla, and Hermiston. It extends south on the US 97 corridor all the way to Bend.

Highs for most people Tuesday through Friday are expected to be 100° to 110°, with the hottest temperatures likely around the Tri-Cities and Hermiston which are likely to exceed 110° at least once during this event.
Excessive heat is forecast to continue into Water Follies weekend, but that is too far out for the National Weather Service to post formal alerts for. On top of being switched to a warning as time moves on, extensions of the time period of the alert may also occur.
Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles. If you have to be outdoors during the hottest time of the day, drink plenty of water, take breaks, and stay in the shade as much as possible. Remember that heat stroke is an emergency that warrants a call to 911.
